Invited to Berlin to take part in The Inner Bark of Trees festival by Archive Books, we hosted a workshop around approaching taste from different angles (sight, smell, imagination, movement, memory, sound, etc). We tasted a variety of olive oils from Palestine which we found in Berlin, as well as oils which were brought by workshop participants from Tunisia, and Algeria. Expanding outward from the local context of non-European olive oils in Berlin, the group questioned how taste can be blinded by visual marketing and the political realities they represent. After discussing the potential for labels to shape truths, realities and notions of value, the group then played around with constructing personal labels drawing from memories and deep sensory knowledge.
